‘Sam Bahadur,’ directed by Meghna Gulzar, stars Vicky Kaushal, Sanya Malhotra, and Fatima Sana Shaikh.
Maya Manekshaw, Sam Manekshaw’s daughter, who has seen the film twice, appreciated its intent.
She also admitted that she cried every time she watched the movie.
A reverent homage to one of the most important Indians of the past century is Sam Bahadur. It does the man a great disservice as well—happy to print the legend, uninterested in learning the whole story. Co-written by Bhavani Iyer and Shantanu Shrivastava, Meghna Gulzar’s Manekshaw has no meaningful flaws and no failures that can be attributed to anyone else. Sam, a rule-breaker similar to the errant soldiers in Lakshya, Shershah, and Pippa, introduces the story.
When, on one hand, a film earns more than Rs 100 crore at the box office, on the other hand, there is a 99% chance that the film will be criticized. Are you wondering why I said 99 instead of 100? Because Sam Bahadur is standing till 1%. So not every work in life is for making money; respect is more valuable than Rs 100 crore. The story is of a person who was shot not by one, two, or three, but by 9 bullets in the Second World War. Even the doctor refused to treat him. Do you know what he said at that time? “Nothing but a donkey’s kick.” (“कुछ नहीं बस गधे ने लात मारी होगी”) Now understand why Bahadur was written in his name?
There is one more story which will give you goosebumps after reading it, the most dangerous Prime Minister of the country whom even history itself is afraid of, Madam Indira Gandhi who came with the slogan of Indira, the big ministers who talked to her with their eyes bowed down and Sam Manekshaw called her Sweety. Your mind was shaken after hearing these two things, so imagine that if you get to see this person for 2 hours, what a great value for money film will be made, right? So boss, your thinking is 50% right and 50% wrong, that’s why not everyone likes films like ‘Sam Bahadur’. There’s a simple reason for it. Some children in school used to fall asleep during history class, if that habit remains the same then you will definitely fall asleep in the theater. But Sam Bahadur has done the work of giving shape to all the thoughts of those who used to imagine what they heard in the history class.
Don’t mistake a smart person who has to use his mind not just to judge but to be an entertainer. Is the film boring? This is the biggest question in the minds of some people. If you’re asking about the screenplay, the answer might be yes for some people. But if you’re talking about the content, then this film is not even 1% boring. The story brings something interesting in every scene and time has not passed at all. Yes, one thing will be a little jarring, the name of the film is Sam Bahadur, so the personal story should have been a little more. It would have done justice to the title as it is more focused on history. Meaning, we could read all this about Sam Manikshaw’s connection with history in books like ‘Paan Singh Tomar’ or classic movies like ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’. Such things come out which cannot be read on the internet. ‘Sam Bahadur’ gives a shape by combining things from the internet but does not reveal the secrets of Manikshaw which we had expected.
Vicky Kushal in Sam Bahadur
If you are watching Vicky Kaushal’s ‘Uri: The Surgical Strike’ by comparison or are planning to watch the film for that reason. So stop there because he was a different type. Nothing like that will happen here. There is action, there is patriotism and emotions in the film. But the cinema there was made to appeal to the masses. There are scenes in which these people create noise whereas here every scene is felt with peace.
You might have heard this a thousand times, but even if I say it 1001 times, it will help that the biggest reason for ‘Sam Bahadur’ is the performance of Vicky Kaushal. ‘The’ was added before the name not for respect but for the acting that he has done in this film and no one will be able to do it again. It is one thing to run a film by becoming a hero and the other is to make yourself disappear according to that story. Get so lost in public cinema that you can’t find the real life actor; you should be recognized only by the name of the lead character of the story.
Vicky Kaushal’s style of speaking and body language while walking brings ‘Manikshaw’ to life. Perhaps no other actor would have done as much justice to a real life character as Vicky has done to ‘Sam Bahadur’. There can’t be a bigger compliment than this, because after watching Vicky’s acting for 2 hours, one will feel like giving a real life Manikshaw salute.
Fatima Sana Shaikh in Sam Bahadur
But the role of Fatima as Indira did not appeal to us. Meaning, the work that Bobby Deol has done in Animal, standing in front of Ranbir Kapoor. That faceoff Manikshaw vs Indira seems a bit weak in the film. Because Fatima as actor Vicky Kaushal is not even around.
